Exclusive: Former Captain Asghar Afghan Refutes False Rumors of a Cricket Ban in Afghanistan

Former Afghanistan cricket captain Asghar Afghan has refuted rumors of a potential cricket ban in the country, assuring fans that the sport remains vital to Afghanistan’s culture. His statement aims to quell concerns and reinforce the commitment to cricket’s development amidst ongoing challenges.

Former Afghanistan cricket team captain Asghar Afghan, who led his nation from 2015 to 2021 and played in six Tests, 114 ODIs, and 75 T20Is, is set to return to the field in the third edition of the Legends League Cricket 2024. Afghan will represent Gujarat Greats under Shikhar Dhawan’s new captaincy.

In an exclusive interview with CricTracker, he shared his thoughts on Afghanistan’s historic ODI victory against South Africa. He confidently predicted future wins against cricketing powerhouses like India. He also discussed the key elements Afghanistan must focus on to excel in Test cricket, the most extended format. He reflected on their chances in the upcoming Champions Trophy 2025. The 37-year-old, currently playing in LLC 2024, also hinted at potential opportunities to work with IPL franchises.

Selected Highlights

1. What are your thoughts on Afghanistan’s historic series win over South Africa in Sharjah?

Teams often struggle facing Afghanistan in Sharjah, as it’s our home ground, and we deeply understand the pitch conditions. The outcome might have differed if this match had been played in South Africa or England. Nevertheless, Afghanistan demonstrated exceptional skill and bowling prowess. On paper, our players have more experience than those on the South African side, as many of our players regularly compete at a high level, aside from just one or two.

2. Do you believe Afghanistan can defeat India in any future series?

In cricket, anything is possible. The match between Afghanistan and India in the 2018 Asia Cup ended in a tie, and just recently, the last T20 match of the India tour also concluded in a tie, leading to a super over. There’s no doubt that Afghanistan is a formidable team. It’s impossible to predict whether we can defeat India because cricket is unpredictable; the team that performs best on the day will emerge victorious. If a series were held between India and Afghanistan, it would undoubtedly be a tough contest. While winning in India is challenging, a match in Sharjah could present difficulties for India due to our familiarity with the conditions.

3. What are your thoughts on recent reports speculating that cricket might be banned in Afghanistan due to government or political influences?

A significant amount of misinformation regarding this issue is circulating on social media. The truth is that cricket holds a special place in the hearts of the Afghan people, including the government and its officials. Everyone, from the citizens to the ministers, shares a deep passion for the sport and desires its growth and success. The rumors suggesting a ban are false; cricket is thriving in Afghanistan, and the enthusiasm for the game is palpable. It is the one source of joy that unites the nation and brings smiles to countless faces.

4. How do you evaluate Afghanistan’s performance in the upcoming Champions Trophy?

The pitches in Pakistan and India are similar, primarily favoring batting but often becoming slower as the match progresses. Afghanistan must approach these games with a strong strategy and a focus on high-quality cricket. Currently, Afghanistan boasts a team rich in experience, with players who participate in leagues around the globe and face various bowling styles.

Few teams in the world can match Afghanistan’s level of experience today, aside from India and perhaps one or two others. However, there are ongoing discussions about whether India will participate in the tournament due to political tensions. It’s crucial to keep sports and politics separate; cricket should be a platform for unity, not division. I am confident that Afghanistan will perform excellently in the upcoming Champions Trophy.

With extensive experience in the 50-over and T20 World Cups, the team has developed a strong belief in its ability to compete against opponents. As a result, there is optimism that Afghanistan’s performance in the Champions Trophy will stand out this time.

5. What are the areas of improvement for Afghanistan to succeed in Test cricket?

To begin with, strengthening our first-class cricket is essential. All national players must participate in the first-class season whenever it takes place. As our first-class season approaches, it’s concerning that around 40 to 50 of our young cricketers have left the country. If the current 25 to 30 players do not engage in first-class cricket, our progress in Test cricket will lag significantly. I urge the cricket board to ensure that national players participate in domestic competitions, as this would provide invaluable experience for young talents. Only through this approach can we excel in this format.

6. How are your preparations for LLC, and what are your team’s chances of lifting the cup?

Our team looks strong on paper, featuring players like Shikhar Dhawan, Chris Gayle, Mohammad Kaif, and Shannon Gabriel. We are actively playing regular cricket, and I have previously participated in several cricket leagues. In T20 cricket, unpredictability is the game’s name, so it’s hard to make definite predictions. However, we are committed to playing quality cricket and will see how it unfolds.

7. If given a chance to work in the IPL in any role, would you like to join any team?

Undoubtedly, the IPL is a significant and dynamic arena in this sport. Working in the IPL offers a wealth of experience, bringing together the best players and coaches worldwide. While I cannot specify which team I want to work with, any opportunity in the IPL would be valuable. Being part of any team would provide insights and experiences incredibly beneficial for professional growth.
